January 2-February 24 The Feature Area is relatively new to the Guardino Gallery. Situated in the front area where the frame shop used to be, the new Feature Area will host "Mini-shows" on a changing monthly basis. We will also be scheduling the Window as a showing area and a place for installations. | IN THE FEATURE AREA:Julie Jetton’s photography is a study of pure color and composition. She distills order out of chaos in the urban environment through her compositions. She’s drawn to dilapidated buildings that have been painted and repainted, all in an effort to minimize graffiti and revive the unsightly. This attempt at renewal creates layers of color. “Many of the buildings I photographed a few years ago have been continually repainted, and some have been completely refurbished. The compositions are gone, lost to renewal, and the images now remain only on film,” said Jetton. She is drawn to simplicity of form whether it occurs in living beings or inanimate objects. | | Emily Lazar creates sculpture from steel & fabric. Sewing is an act commonly associated with female domesticity and craft. Steel is a medium most commonly associated with masculinity and strength and when juxtaposed with her sewn sculptures provide balance. Her work is used to state the ideas and social situations that inspire them visually and to thereby emphasize their importance. Her work is about the emotional connections and the relationships and social situations that transpire because of it. “I feel a strong emotional connection to the subjects of race, family, poverty, love, death, sex, and birth and I explore the importance of these themes through the making of sculpture.” | | IN THE WINDOW GALLERY: Chuck St. John’s abstract paintings are unusual in that they have a glow about them, changing with the viewing angle. This effect is created by the use of stainless steel, pigment and resin. The stailess steel ground gives each piece a great reflectivity, along with high color saturation through his use of resin & pigments. “I have always been drawn to color, movement, light, and line in art. I believe that the interplay of these, when combined effectively, can achieve intense abstract results. My goals are to continue learning about resin as a medium, and developing an effective emotional communication with the viewer through the completed piece,” to quote St. John. |
