May 29-June 22

The Feature Area is relatively new to the Guardino Gallery. Situated in the front area where the frame shop used to be, the new Feature Area will host "Mini-shows" on a changing monthly basis. We will also be scheduling the Window as a showing area and a place for installations.

IN THE FEATURE AREA:

Cycle Seen 2008 presents an insight into the diverse bike culture of Portland, Oregon. Representative of Portland’s thriving bicycle community is that over one hundred artists submitted more than 500 images for the Cycle Seen exhibition. The selected photographs seen here at Guardino Feature Gallery were narrowed down to form a unique collection of cyclist portraits. These portraits illuminate a range of the cyclists who live and bike in our city. The choice of location, bicycle, gear, and clothing tell a lot about each of these individuals and how cycling fits into and enhances their lives. Identifying with cycling is part of a larger portrait of the city of Portland.

IN THE WINDOW GALLERY:

Cycle Seen invited artist Matt Cartwright will be showing metal sculptures made with bicycle parts in the Guardino Window Gallery. He is a designer and fabricator who works within many different communities in Portland, Oregon, including the cycling community. He builds functional art, sculpture and custom furniture through collaboration, innovative design and creative use of new or recycled materials. Often he will use a recycled material both for form and inspiration. He is prolific with metal, but also uses just about any new, used or surplus material he encounters. He likes to see how things can be rearranged or combined to develop new parameters for thought.
