September 25-October 26

The Feature Area is relatively new to the Guardino Gallery. Situated in the front area where the frame shop used to be, the new Feature Area will host "Mini-shows" on a changing monthly basis. We will also be scheduling the Window as a showing area and a place for installations.

IN THE FEATURE AREA

Jeanne Henry carves clay reliefs, formed and stained to mirror her own photographs.  Each hand carved clay relief gives the illusion of depth, emphasizing perspective and a sense of space. Her interest is in foreign archways, windows and alleyways, worlds that you can "walk into", as if on a journey.  After building up multiple thin layers of clay, she carves into them using very small, precise hand tools.  For color, Jeanne selects from containers of oxides, clays she has gathered on her travels and commercial stains. Some of her newest works for this show are revolving, as if viewing the countryside from a train. The final result is an illusion of depth, emphasizing perspective, detail and a sense of space.

IN THE WINDOW GALLERY

Julia Gardner creates her mixed media pieces with resin- an extremely tricky, often unpredictable medium.  She works on wood panels in which she layers images and multiple layers of resin.  Each layer has to be created with precise temperature and humidity conditions to create artwork that results in the almost glass-like final piece. Working with her photography, Gardner layers images within layers of resin (usually 1-4 layers), producing a layer of a story within each layer of resin. Julia also embeds found objects such as feathers, bird eggs and organic matter into the resin, capturing the items as if in amber.
