Jeff Phegley & Martin Anderson

Jeff Phegley, oil paintings & etchings

Martin Anderson, acrylic paintings

March 29-April 24

web-hoyo  Jeff Phegley uses cigar boxes as a mount for his small paintings.  The idea of tiny, separate worlds inside these wooden cases intrigued him. Each posed different artistic challenges, as the size of the box or frame would dictate the size and composition of the painting. The wooden crates invite additional experimentation with their design, which allowed ideas to stretch into multiple frames for a more dynamic resolution of a subject matter. The works in this series address physical and mental isolation.  Figures dominate the landscapes with intense expressions of doubt, anxiety and wonderment, echoing his thoughts on subjects such as technological advancement, flight, and escapism.  Phegley will also be displaying some intaglio prints.

Martin Anderson will be showing paintings influenced by people and their stories.  His paintings teem with atmosphere.  Focusing on interesting characters, working people and musicians, his work is populated with people engaged in activity.  He seems to have a special interest in street scenes and the feel of nightlife, the music scene and street entertainment. In  “Conversation”, several people stand on a street corner talking, ignoring a person lying in a doorway.  It’s a moody and dark piece: and the viewer knows there is a story there. Working from drawings, Anderson works in acrylic paint, charcoal & prisma-color.
